Nabu has, on occasion been able to animate the Helm, Amulet, and Cloak without a physical form, though this significantly drains his powers.

After Nabu was killed by the Spectre during Day of Vengeance, the wearer of the Helm was free to act as Doctor Fate on their own. In the long history of the character, there have been a number of hosts of Doctor Fate in addition to Kent Nelson, wearers of the Helm include Eric & Linda Strauss, Hector Hall, Kent V. Though Nabu’s spirit is meant to advise from within the Helm, he has a tendency to outright possess the wearer, meaning that Doctor Fate is really a partnership (at times one-sided) between the Nabu and the wearer. Wearing the Helm transforms one into Doctor Fate, bestowing Nabu’s incredible power on the wearer, but with a terrible cost. His tomb was eventually discovered by archaeologist Kent Nelson, who would become the first Doctor Fate.
When Nabu’s physical body died, he imbued his essence, and indeed his vast mystical abilities, into a helmet, amulet, and cloak henceforth known as the Helm of Fate, the Amulet of Anubis, and the Cloak of Destiny, though the primary vessel of power is the Helm. Fate’s power is derived from Nabu, an ancient Egyptian mystic and one of the Lords of Order – powerful beings dedicated to fighting the forces of Chaos throughout the universe.
